Streetsville, Mississauga. Since 2011.

The base is the job.

We are a design-build landscape contractor with one crew and the owner on every job. We put eight inches of compacted Granular A under a patio and twelve under a driveway, because GTA clay heaves and stone only stays flat when what is under it is built properly.

One backyard, five stages, one camera

Scroll and a Streetsville backyard builds itself, shot from the same corner of the yard from bare clay to the first evening with the lights on. Watch the second frame closely. It is the part that decides whether the patio is still flat in ten years, and once the stone goes down nobody ever sees it again.

  1. String lines on bare clay.Stakes set to the drawing, and the grade checked to fall 2 to 3 percent away from the house in the first 2 metres.
  2. Eight inches you will never see.Geotextile over the clay, Granular A compacted in lifts, an inch of HPB bedding on top. No limestone screenings.
  3. Stone laid on a flat base.60 mm pavers on the patio, the wall stepped into the slope, every joint swept and plate-compacted.
  4. Planting that can take August.Beds of triple mix, sod rolled the same week, trees sized for the yard they are going into.
  5. Still flat in ten years.Lights along the walk, the wall and the steps. The part under the stone is why it will still look like this.

Front yards

The walk you stop apologising for.

Cracked asphalt, a lawn that gave up, junipers past the window sills. Six seconds later it is a 60 mm interlock walk on a compacted base, armour stone steps set into the grade instead of perched on it, and planting chosen for a dry summer. The front walk is the first thing every visitor stands on.

Since 2011

It started with a trailer and a plate compactor.

Daniel Kowalczyk started Hollowmere in Streetsville in 2011 and is still on every job. The name got around after the December 2013 ice storm, when the crew spent the weeks after Christmas clearing broken limbs out of yards across the village. Much of the work since has been rebuilding patios that someone else laid on limestone screenings. That is where the rule comes from. The base is the job.
